Construction Engineering Masters Dissertation Conference

Future leaders in the business of construction present their research to help advance the construction industry and support transformation.

Today, students undertaking the Construction Engineering Master of Studies degree (CEM) at the University of Cambridge will present their research to a packed audience at the programme’s annual dissertation conference. Students on this programme are experienced industry professionals representing a range of professions and company types, who have been identified as emerging leaders in the business of construction.

The CEM dissertation conference is fast becoming a key conference for the industry, showing continued growth year-on-year as a highly relevant and targeted audience gather for the opportunity to engage with the latest industry-relevant research and leaders of the future. This gathering of experts interested in improving the performance, efficiency and sustainability of the industry creates a stimulating and productive event that has the potential to transform the future of construction.

The research agenda

The conference presents the culmination of one cohort’s research – this year cohort 7 who started the programme in 2017. During the two parallel sessions students present, and answer questions about, their research findings.

Reflecting the wide range of expertise within the cohort, CEM dissertations cover a variety of topics and research methods. This year’s dissertation topics include productivity, partnering, procurement, programme risk management, well-being, data management, project evaluation, engagement, sustainability and change management.

By applying academic rigour to their existing experience and expertise, CEM students are able to produce evidence-based research that addresses key issues within the industry. Directly aligned to the needs and realities of the industry, this research can form the basis for real, practical change.

For the past two years these students have balanced work and studies, developing their technical, research and managerial skills to become agents of change who are inspired and equipped to play a transformative role in the sector.
