Laing O'Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology

The University of Cambridge Construction Engineering Masters (CEM) Degree is a bespoke and unique leadership programme for the construction industry.

Our unique Masters degree is a truly multidisciplinary leadership programme that aims to transform the construction industry by empowering agents of change to meet the future challenges of society. The test of how well we achieve this vision is demonstrated by the experience of our students & industry leaders, who say:

"It feels like I have been walking around with my eyes closed for years. The exposure to all this knowledge, experience and perspective has opened them wide. It's transformational!"(Rob Higginson, Technical Commercial Leader, Laing O’Rourke, CEM student.)

"I believe this course is not only unique but vital for our industry... I would 100% recommend this course to others in the industry. Through this course we will begin to transform the industry." (Kate Hall, Design Director, Major Projects Director, HS2 Ltd. CEM student.)

The CEM is a Master of Studies (MSt) - a two-year, part-time research degree run by the Laing O’Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology in the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering, in association with Cambridge Judge Business School, and in collaboration with academics from other Departments and Universities. It was launched in 2011 with industry partner Laing O’Rourke to fulfil a shared vision of transforming the construction industry through innovation, education and technology.

The programme provides a unique opportunity for professionals in the construction sector to step beyond their immediate context and to explore the future of the industry alongside leading government, industry and academic experts. The course covers the industry in its broadest sense: from policy and planning through to the physical construction and maintenance of infrastructure.

This leadership degree is targeted at those who have at least five years of professional experience and have already attained a leadership role, or been identified as potential leaders, in their organisations. The degree attracts participants from a range of professions in the construction sector, including, for example design managers, project managers, lawyers, architects, asset managers and commercial managers. Many of our participants already hold senior roles, and the part-time format enables students to continue with their professional careers whilst studying.

The programme encourages students to challenge current practice in the planning, organisation, delivery and management of infrastructure. By applying academic rigour to their existing expertise within the sector, students are inspired and equipped to uncover innovative models for improving the performance, efficiency and sustainability of the construction industry.

The curriculum is designed not only to impart knowledge but also to enhance the analytical, managerial and leadership skills of participants. Students return to their respective companies with expertise and confidence - thus contributing to their career development as well as the performance of the company and the industry.
