Biography
Dr. Mohammed Elshafie is an Associate Professor and the Chair of the Graduate Studies and Research Committee at the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at Qatar University. Before joining Qatar University he was the Deputy Director and a University Senior Lecturer at the Laing O'Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology at the University of Cambridge. Dr Elshafie, who has been a Fellow at Robinson College Cambridge since 2008, was also a Co-Investigator at the Cambridge Centre on Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC).
Dr Elshafie's research group has been at the forefront of applying advanced sensing technology on a wide range of civil engineering infrastructure applications with over 80 field deployments worldwide. The team's work has been recognised by a number of high profile international awards including the Fleming Award 2013 for Geotechnical Engineering Excellence from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the British Geotechnical Society in London, the Ground Investigation and Monitoring Award 2014 sponsored by the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Awards, the ICE Russell Crampton Award for the best paper in the ICE Proceedings of Geotechnical Engineering for 2014, and the American Society of Civil Engineers' J. James R. Croes Medal (2019).
