We are delighted to announce that LORC Associate Professor Dr Brian Sheil and his co-authors, Peter Hensman and Zhandos Orazalin, have been awarded the 2024 BGA Case Histories Award for their paper "Monitoring the construction of a deep energy-from-waste bunker in soft clay and peat," published in Géotechnique in 2023.
The judges agreed that the winning paper provides a detailed account of predicted and observed performance for the project, effectively conveying key findings through visual aids. This data set covers a 'combi-wall', an increasingly popular retaining system, within challenging ground conditions (soft clays and peats), offering valuable knowledge for future projects.
The BGA Case Histories Award encourages and recognises the importance of exchanging exemplary geotechnical knowledge and experience of the performance of constructed works. The award is presented for an outstanding contribution to the knowledge and understanding of the United Kingdom geotechnical engineering profession through the publication of a well-considered and researched case history or histories or the publication of recommended practices or design methodologies based on the evaluation of case histories that provide beneficial insights into the geotechnical aspects of constructed works.
The award will be presented at the BGA’s Annual Conference at ICE in London on 12 June 2024.
