Laing O'Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology

Prof J.S. Kuang of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology will be giving a special seminar on Thursday 16th October at 1600 for the Laing O'Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology.

Catastrophic failure of infilled reinforced concrete frames has repeatedly been reported in many devastating earthquakes in the world, of which the observed seismic performances fall short of design engineers’ expectations.  In this seminar, examples of seismic failure mechanisms of infilled RC frames with different infill configurations are introduced, followed by presenting a thorough investigation, with an advanced damage-based discrete finite element modelling method, on the dynamic properties, infill-to-frame interaction, bracing mechanisms, hysteretic behaviour and seismic vulnerability of common types of infilled frames.  Based on the research findings, design recommendations to identify and mitigate the vulnerability of infilled reinforced concrete frame structures to seismic actions are presented and discussed.

The lecture will be held in LR5 in the Department of Engineering. Please email sec@construction.cam.ac.uk for further information.

About the Speaker:

Prof Kuang received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1992. He is currently Professor of Civil Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Prof Kuang’s research spans seismic analysis and design of structural concrete, seismic vulnerability assessment of buildings, tall building structures, and computational mechanics and simulations in structural engineering.  His outstanding research on seismic resistant structures has earned him the prestigious Telford Premium in 2014 and TK Hsieh Award in 2006 by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), and the HKIE Transactions Prize in 2007 by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).  Prof Kuang is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers.  He was President of the International Society for Computing in Civil and Building Engineering (ISCCBE) from 2010 to 2014.  ISCCBE is one of the world’s leading international professional societies in civil, construction and structural engineering.
