Laing O'Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology

Dr Mohammed Elshafie, Laing O’Rourke Lecturer in Construction Engineering - who co-authored the paper Fibre Optic Monitoring of a Deep Circular Excavation with CSIC colleagues and industry partners Tina Schwamb, Kenichi Soga, Robert J. Mair, Richard Sutherden, Clotilde Boquet and John Greenwood – will be awarded the Russell Crampton Prize for Best Paper at a ceremony held tomorrow in London at the Institution of Civil Engineers.

The paper, published in the Geotechnical Engineering journal describes the monitoring activity undertaken at Abbey Mills shaft F, one of the main shafts of Thames Water’s Lee tunnel project in London. Shaft F is one of the largest ever constructed in the UK, defying challenging ground conditions. Fibre optic instrumentation was deployed to measure bending strains of wall panels. The findings will also provide valuable information for future similar projects.
