Laing O'Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology

CIT Lab - Digital twin research

Applications are invited for two Postdoctoral Research Assistants/Associates in Construction Information Technology (Fixed Term), funded through the European Commission's H2020 framework programme, to work with Dr. Ioannis Brilakis at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. There are two positions available, one position for 36 months and one position for 24 months.

Both positions are available within the BIM2TWIN: Optimal Construction Management & Production Control project, which started on 1 November 2020 and ends on 30 April 2024. The BIM2TWIN is a collaboration between 17 partners: the (1) Centre Scientifique Et Tecqnique Du Batiment (CSTB) in France is the operational coordinator, supported by the (2) University of Cambridge; (3) Technion – Israel Institute of Technology; (4) Technical University of Munich; (5) Institut National De Recherche Eninformatique Et Automatique; (6) Fira Group; (7) Intsite; (8) Technalia; (9) Acciona (10) Ruhr-University Bochum; (11) Spada; (12) University Polytechnic Delle Marche; (13) Unismart; (14) Orange; (15) Siemens; (16) IDP; and (17) Aarhus University

The successful candidates will be involved in most project activities and have a primary role in Progress Monitoring & Quality Control for Volumetric Building, i.e. creating a prototype that automates (a) the detection of object-representing point clusters and assignment of the most likely object labels to them probabilistically; (b) the detection of expected-but-missing objects and the updating of the corresponding activities' progress status; (c) the measurement of object spatial properties (length, width, flatness, etc.) on their corresponding point clusters, and their comparison against their corresponding as designed values and specification tolerance limits. Other activities include integrating prototypes into a common framework, developing a user interface, testing, and dissemination of outcomes.

Applicants will be expected to 1) have obtained, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or Architecture, with a focus on one or more of the following areas: a) computing in civil engineering or architecture; b) machine learning; c) and construction informatics; 2) and to possess a) good writing skills and some research experience with sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge in one or more of the areas above; b) good communication and presentation skills; c) programming experience in one or more object oriented languages; and d) experience of managing own workload. In addition, academic teaching, supervision and/or industry experience is desired but is not a requisite.

The closing date for applications is 15 January 2021.

Please contact Dr Ioannis Brilakis (ib340@cam.ac.uk) for queries of a technical nature related to the roles, or Dr Maria Carvalho (cit-admin@construction.cam.ac.uk) for questions about the application process.
