Dr Olivia Remes, a Research Associate at the Cambridge Laing O'Rourke Centre, delivered an inspiring and thought-provoking talk where she shared valuable insights on how young women can excel in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The talk focused on Olivia's research at the University of Cambridge, as well as her collaborative research work with Oka Chan, a Construction Engineering Masters student (CEM), where they conducted research involving schoolgirls.
Olivia's message was clear: women in STEM are not only crucial for solving the world's most pressing challenges, but their involvement also sets a powerful example for future generations of girls who are passionate about science and maths. By increasing the representation of women in these fields, we create a culture of inclusion and belonging that can inspire and empower other girls to follow in their footsteps.
A key theme of Olivia's presentation was the power of role models. She urged everyone in the room to celebrate and uplift women in STEM, showcasing their groundbreaking work and illustrating the vast opportunities these careers can offer.
As Olivia wrapped up her talk, she emphasized that initiatives like She Talks Science are crucial for providing high-performing young women with the tools, mentorship, and confidence needed to excel in STEM careers. The event brought together Year 12 students from across the UK, offering them the chance to connect with like-minded peers, explore academic pathways, and receive invaluable advice about pursuing STEM opportunities.
Olivia's words left a lasting impression, reminding us all of the importance of creating spaces where young women can feel empowered to follow their passions in STEM. She said, “She Talks Science is an incredible event, and I was honoured to be part of it. It was encouraging to see so many aspiring students, and I really enjoyed being there.”
At the Cambridge Laing O'Rourke Centre, we are proud to support initiatives like She Talks Science Conference, which was organised by Murray Edwards College and inspired by the next generation of female leaders in STEM. We look forward to seeing how these young women will shape the future of science, technology, and innovation.
