The Cambridge Laing O’Rourke Centre strengthened its commitment to innovation and best practice construction with a high-profile visit to two of the United Kingdom’s most advanced developments: the Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities and the Ellison Institute of Technology in Oxford. The Schwarzman Centre, recently completed by Laing O’Rourke, showcases how modern construction methods can deliver complex, high-quality buildings efficiently and sustainably.
The project used off-site manufacture to produce more than 3,000 structural components, including columns, slabs and the acoustic box-in-box walls, in controlled factory conditions before assembling them on site. This approach helped the team complete the main structure in only twenty-five weeks. Low-carbon concrete and recycled steel reinforcement reduced the building’s embodied carbon, while prefabricated facades, substantial insulation, and carefully detailed windows supported high energy and environmental performance. A comprehensive digital engineering strategy underpinned the delivery, with all major architectural, structural and building service elements modelled in a shared digital environment before construction, ensuring coordinated and precise installation.
As a result of these combined strategies, the project delivered significant social and economic value in a sensitive location in the heart of Oxford, achieving zero complaints from the local community and academics, and aligning fully with the aspirations of the customer and donor.
The visit was made possible through the support of Ray O’Rourke KBE, Chairman of Laing O’Rourke, with Mike Lewis, Business Unit Leader, hosting the delegation in person. Representing the Cambridge Laing O’Rourke Centre were Professor Cam Middleton, Dr Ashan Asmone, Paul Fidler and Dr Zhengyang Ling. They were joined by Jared Lazard, a Construction Engineering Masters alumnus, and Keiran Kelly, a current Construction Engineering Masters student, both from Laing O’Rourke.
At the Ellison Institute of Technology, Gareth Jacques, Project Director, provided the group with an in-depth overview of the project’s vision, delivery approach and the advanced construction techniques underpinning the new facility.
A dedicated part of the visit focused on Laing O’Rourke’s role in delivering the Ellison Institute of Technology, a major new research campus designed to bring together experts across science, technology, policy and entrepreneurship to accelerate real-world applications and solutions. A helicopter overview added valuable context, offering a clear view of the scale and ambition of the research and innovation hub.
The visit provided a valuable platform for sharing good practice in digital engineering, data analytics and modern construction methods. It reinforced the centre’s commitment to collaborative innovation across the built environment and demonstrated how modern methods of construction can improve efficiency, sustainability and engineering outcomes on complex projects.
