Dr. Gang Yan’s main research interest is in the field of structural health monitoring. It involves sensor development, structural modeling, data analysis and damage evaluation. Previously he developed guided wave-based methods to detect and identify damage in engineering structures. The outcome may lead to an increase in structural safety and reduced maintenance costs.
During his visit, Gang is seeking potential applications of the promising carbon nanotube (CNT) materials for engineering structures. He integrates CNT mats with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites to realize functions of self-heating and self-monitoring. Applications of these multifunctional composites in de-icing and health monitoring for wind turbine blades, repairing and health monitoring of cracked steel bridge components are studied.
